Kazakh Tax Authorities Identify 72 Billion Tenge in Underreported Blogger Income
@TengriNews
Tax audits targeting prominent social media influencers in Kazakhstan have uncovered significant discrepancies in reported income. Vice Minister of Finance Yerzhan Birzhanov announced that since the start of these inspections, revenue authorities have issued 1,586 notifications to 854 bloggers concerning underreported earnings totaling 72 billion tenge.
To date, 622 of these individuals have submitted amended tax declarations. They have collectively increased their declared income by 18.3 billion tenge and paid an additional 1 billion tenge in taxes. A further approximately 600 million tenge in tax payments has been mandated for this group.
Birzhanov noted that active audits are currently underway for seven bloggers where the amount of additionally assessed taxes exceeds 10 million tenge each. He warned that if significant sums are not paid voluntarily following these measures, the cases will be escalated to law enforcement agencies for collection or other procedural decisions will be made.
The vice minister declined to name specific individuals, citing taxpayer confidentiality laws.
This wave of scrutiny follows a similar event in February of last year when numerous Kazakh bloggers received tax notifications about billions in alleged debt. At that time, the State Revenue Committee reported that 594 people had understated their income by 53.3 billion tenge.
Reports from within the influencer community indicate the scale of some assessments. Blogger Alisher Yelikbayev stated that some of his peers faced additional tax charges exceeding 300 million tenge, implying their estimated business turnover approached one billion tenge.
The audits appear to have focused on content creators with follower counts exceeding 20,000. The substantial sums demanded from many came as a surprise and sparked widespread discontent among the digital creator community.
